ZETDC in $150m power line talks with Chinese firm
THE Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) is finalising discussions with a Chinese contractor, China CAMC Engineering Company, to invest about $150 million for the construction of a 400 kilovolt (kv) power line from Mutare to Triangle.
Acting ZETDC managing director, Howard Choga, told The Financial Gazette last week that the Chinese contractor will bring in the required funding as part of the deal between the two companies.
“We are finalising discussions with China CAMC Engineering Company for the construction of a 400kv line from Mutare to Triangle. The funding structure is that the Chinese contractor will bring in about $150 million, the amount required for the project. The project is expected to improve connectivity and stabilise the national grid,” said Choga
China CAMC Engineering Company is a unit of China National Machinery Industry Corporation and is one of the largest engineering companies in China specialising in power projects, engineering and mining projects.
The Shenzhen Stock Exchange-listed company has completed more than 100 large scale projects in over 70 countries across the world, according to information on its website.
ZETDC is also involved in Zizabona project, a power transmission line that will link Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia.
The power transmission line, which will originate from Victoria Falls, is expected to improve connectivity and electricity trading between the countries.
Choga said: “After the completion of the Zizabona project, we expect an improved connectivity between Zimbabwe and the regional countries involved. The project is to be implemented in two phases. The first phase will cover the construction of a 120-kilometre, 330 kilovolt line from Hwange Power Station to Victoria Falls where a switching station will be built on the Zimbabwe side,” he said.
The line will extend to a substation at Livingstone in Zambia.
He said the second phase would involve the construction of a 300km, 330kv line from Livingstone to Katima Mulilo in Namibia, through Pandamatenga in Botswana.
The Zimbabwe-Zambia interconnector will be built as a high voltage line with a transmission capacity of 430kV.
However, it would operate as a 330kv line during the first phase.
When fully operational, the Zizabona transmission line will, among other things, make it possible for NamPower to import power to Namibia directly from Hwange in Zimbabwe.
Currently, electricity from the Hwange Power Station is routed to Namibia through South Africa.
