Gutu villagers call for dam rehab

Gutu villagers call for dam rehab

Villagers in Gondwi resettlement area in Gutu have appealed to Government for the rehabilitation of two small dams to enable them to venture into irrigation.

The two dams in Villages 13 and 23 were washed away by cyclone-induced rains two decades ago.

They were never repaired.

Ward 29 Councillor Cde Auxillian Mhuru said the dams used to be the mainstay of food security in the entire Gondwi area.

Cde Mhuru said farmers in the area had potential to produce enough food and supply the nearby Mpandawana Town with green produce, boosting their income in the process.

“Gondwi used to be an irrigation hub in the past thanks to two small dams in Villages 13 and 23 that used to supply water throughout the year, but the dams were damaged by heavy rains and have not been repaired.

“Farmers in this area can boost food security here and also their income by selling green produce from irrigation that will be revived using water from these two small dams,” she said.

Cde Mhuru urged Government to fund the repair of the dams.

She said repair of the dams will also enable farmers venture into Command Agriculture.
