Thetford Game Reserve and Lodges

Thetford Game Reserve and Lodges

Thetford Game Reserve is only forty minutes away from Harare out on the Mazowe Road and is the perfect place to visit with family and friends.

A mid-week excursion took us down the Golden Stairs Road, through Christon Bank and on to Thetford Game Reserve in the miombo woodlands and rolling hills of Mazowe.

We checked into self-catering Sable Lodge, unpacked, and were ready when our guide Colin picked us up in a safari vehicle for an afternoon game drive. We saw herds of impala, waterbuck, eland, wildebeeste, sable, the occasional buffalo and some rather shy giraffe. Stopping by a dam covered with purple water lilies, in the hopes of seeing a freshwater clawless otter, Colin served us a good Nederburg sauvignon blanc in tall-stemmed wine glasses. The sun was setting when we arrived at an elevated hide in the middle of nowhere, for a Thetford High Tea and sundowner. We were greeted here by a crash of white rhinoceroses, the most social of these large herbivores, who descended en masse for their supplementary evening snack, dished out by Colin. After a feast of sandwiches, samoosas, kebabs, nuts, pop corn, jam scones with cream, tea, coffee and more wine, we climbed back into the vehicle, bundled ourselves in blankets, and drove back to Sable Lodge, for an evening of card games in front of a warm fire.
