Farmers in the Midlands Province have been urged to spray their crops, amid reports of the fall armyworm having been detected in some parts of the province. Provincial Crop and Livestock Officer Mrs Medlinah Magwenzi confirmed that the pest had been identified in some parts of the province, although she was quick to say the situation was still under control.
“We have received reports in Gweru, Kwekwe, Mvuma and Zvishavane, among other places,” she said.
Mrs Magwenzi said the situation was still at a mild stage, adding that irrigation schemes were the most affected.
“According to the information at hand, the irrigation schemes are the most affected,” she said.
“We have started to take precautionary measures and farmers are urged to work hand in glove with Agritex extension officers.”
Mrs Magwenzi urged farmers to begin spraying their crops as a panacea.
