George Maponga in Masvingo
Masvingo has set a target to put nearly 2 000 hectares under winter wheat across the province this year.
The targeted hectarage is in sync with Government’s plans to trim the wheat import bill by making use of idle water bodies to irrigate the crop.
Out of that target, 50 percent will come under the Masvingo Development Trust winter wheat initiative in Chiredzi.
Provincial Agritex Officer Mr Aaron Muchazivepi disclosed that contracting of farmers to avail more land for wheat growing was still underway.
He said to date 1 957ha for winter wheat had been contracted, with the bulky of the land in the Lowveld, Masvingo and Gutu districts.
Inputs were expected from Government’s Command Agriculture programme.
Last year, Masvingo managed less than 800ha under winter wheat.
