PROPERTIES – ACCOMMODATION WANTED, FOR SALE, TO SWAP, ESTATE AGENTS

ACCOMMODATION WANTED

We are constantly receiving requests from evicted farmers to search for suitable, reasonably priced, accommodation in the main centres, mainly Harare.  Often the farmers have been forced off their farms and out of their homes at very short notice and become refugees with nowhere to go.

We also have a number of farmers who have moved to town who can no longer afford the high rentals being asked, which are often being increased to prices far beyond their means.

Should you know of any suitable accommodation available, please let us know so we can keep a record to assist affected farmers.

SUTCLIFFE, ALTHAM JOHN WORTH

1 October 1940 – 25 June 2011

By Des (James) Becker

Our sincere condolences to Lesly, their daughters Sandra, Tracey, Melanie and Kerry, their husbands, grandchildren and families, on the sudden passing of Altham, in Mutare, on Saturday 25 June at 4pm.

Altham was born in Penhalonga, the youngest son of Tommy and Mike.  His eldest brother Colin, ex UHS, was a well known Tengwe farmer.  Guy went into a mining career, now retired in the UK.

Altham (SUCKER) attended UBHS in the first year it opened in 1954, as a Boys High School.  He excelled especially on the sports field and was made head of House in his final year.  He then went on to qualify with Bells Engineering.  He married Lesly Davies, youngest daughter of Jimmy and Busy, a well known pioneering, Umtali family, farming in the lower Vumba area and Burma Valley.

Altham and Les moved to Burma Park, in Burma Valley and pioneered the growing of Burley Tobacco, in which he excelled.  He contributed significantly to the area and community through the ICA, Farmers Association and Air Cured Burley Association.  Together Altham and Les built a magnificent home and garden and raised their four daughters.  They were always very active family and community members.  In 1995 they hosted a family Christmas where 64 family members were hosted in traditional style, which marked a centenary of family being in the country.

As a highly competitive and talented sportsman, he represented Manicaland Province, in rugby, badminton, squash, snooker and latterly bowls, which he so enjoyed as had both his parents.  He has also been a member for many years of the Casuals Cricket Club, enjoying many social games for them and for Burma Valley.

Altham was an enthusiastic guitar player and entertained many a gathering, together with Banjo Coke-Norris.  Who could forget his amusing Shona version of “Waltzing Matilda”?

He loved the outdoors, fishing etc. but held a special passion for fly fishing, which he pursued at every opportunity, including many ‘hot spots’ in Nyanga during the bush war.  He survived many bouts of vicious malaria and a bite on the neck by a black mamba, which had been lying in ambush above his grading shed door.

Altham and Les were privileged to have been able to travel extensively, while visiting their daughters, from Brunai to Scotland, Tanzania to Brybie Island in Australia and many more.  Altham was indeed a true ‘Son’ of our magnificent country and will be sorely missed, but never forgotten, by his family and friends across the globe.

We salute you, and ask God to be gracious with you, may you rest in peace.

The Memorial Service was held at Mutare Presbyterian Church on Saturday 2nd July.

DISCOUNTERS CLUB OF ZIMBABWE

The discounters club concept is gradually being understood more and more by the consumer (who would become the member), with companies having seen the benefit to increased exposure and a larger consumer base immediately (partner).

Where do we, as the driving force of the Discounters Club, see problems in attracting potential consumers, to join as paid up members thus having access to these fantastic discounts:-

1. Due to the tight liquidity issues in Zim, people look at the cost of membership and say that they simply cannot afford to pay $60 for one year.

2. Companies offer specials where they can access these without being a member.

3. Advertising.

4. Communication.

Let’s answer these in their respective order

Yes we all have to watch how we spend our hard earned money these days, due to the high cost of all commodities, not just our day to day living costs. Let’s break down $60 into months and this equates to $5 per month. For me that means just on my butchery bill I have saved myself $15 with the $5 for the cost of the card being negated. Now extrapolate that into other areas and see what you can save on a monthly basis. So is $ 60 really unaffordable. To me you cannot but afford not to become a member as your savings for this cost are too great to miss.

Companies offering specials do this on occasions mainly to get rid of slow moving stock or to promote a new product which does benefit many consumers for that period only. However should you be a member and thus a card holder, you have this opportunity every time you visit a partner company to access the discounts on many items not just those on specials.

Advertising; yes this is a huge issue to us and we should be promoting this in a far bigger way than we are at present. However we also have a liquidity problem and have not been able to advertise like we wish to or should be. We are trying to overcome this which will allow us to campaign aggressively.

This will improve as we grow not just with members but with our partners.

Should you have any suggestions as to where and how we can improve please send them into us.

Please contact us if you would like a list of the companies who are offering a discount and we will email this list to you. Or you could see our website for this information – www.discountersclub.com
