FAREWELL TO YET ANOTHER GREAT EX ZIMBABWE FARMER
Bob Cocker, (‘Dagga boy” of note) How he loved his fishing on the Zambezi with the other Dagga boys!
A good, honest, modest man with integrity, who loved his family, friends, fishing and his farm.
When he lost his farm in Mutepatepa like so many with everything he owned, his two sons working on the farm headed for Zambia. A farm in Mukushi was established which middle son Zingi took over later, and Brian the eldest, Jo and the 3 kids went back to Zimbabwe after a couple of years. Youngest son Stephen, Shannon and their two kids first leased a farm in Mazbuka, for a year then worked for another farmer in the area for three years growing row crops, before moving to Kalomo /Choma area leasing a tobacco farm.
Despite all the other things Bob did in those “wandering years” he was happiest when he helped Stephen grow his first two years of tobacco, and then helping Brian back in Zimbabwe to get back into tobacco growing. Zingi was next on the list this year to help impart his help and knowledge, again to grow tobacco but sadly this was not to be.
Forty one years of happily married life with Karin, three sons Brian, Zingi, Stephen and Suzie. (late laamatjie) Five loved grand children and many friends, he was a great man who inspired all whom he met and will be sorely missed.
Bob, special friend and “In Law”.
Chris, Dawn and families.

Please forward our condolences to Ron and family and also to Sue, we know she and Thomas were very close.
QP was the Colour of the Lowveld and the Spark of every meeting and party we attended. We will miss her colourful way of telling a story and just being herself. She had a very good heart and maybe few people knew that she saved a little HIV+ “settler” orphan boy’s life. If it wasn’t for QP who spotted him and helped him where he was living with his uncle and reported it to Social Welfare so that she could get him registered with Lirhanzo Children’s Village, then little Simon would not be alive today. Today Simon is attending school and doing very well on his HIV treatment. Always smiling and playful, I so wish she could have seen him once more. She was his murungu angel.
You are all in our thoughts
From us all at Edenvale(Schimper and Peyper) including Derick Lemmer

Apologies for the group letter but under the circumstances it is the easiest way to tell you the sad news that Campbell (my Dad) passed away at 08h15 this morning.
While we are sad, we are also very relieved that he is no longer suffering and is in a better place. We are not sure of the arrangements at this stage, but will keep you posted.
In last year November, Dad went on holiday to see my sister, Jeanette, in Cape Town for Christmas. Shortly after New Year he was admitted into hospital with severe breathing difficulties. He was discharged from hospital. All the specialists could not find anything specifically wrong but he slowly went down hill being admitted to hospital a further two times.
It was decided he should stay with Jeanette as he would be more comfortable there, as he was not taking on the hospital stays too well. He chose not to take any more medication and he was so much better for it. His breathing problems subsided but he continued to go downhill.
All of us kids managed to see him a number of times including Heather from the USA. Jeanette, Heather and Mum have done an amazing job of taking care of him. Jeanette and my Mum in particular have been by Dad’s side for the last seven months tending to his every need. Although we employed carers to help in the last few months, Jeanette has been the stalwart during this very difficult time.
A special thanks must go to my brother in law Pete for opening his home to the whole family during this period and giving us such strong support. I will be going to Cape Town soonest and I hope to bring my Mum back to the farm before she flies back to the States in September.
Fond Regards
Rob and family.

GLORIA IVY JORDAAN : Passed away on 8th April 2012
Mom in my arms I held you tight
Through the hardest part of life
In my heart the memories clear
Of the greatest mum I love so dear.
I held you so close to my heart
Praying that we’ll never part
But God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around you and whispered “come with me”
With tearful eyes I watched you, and saw you pass away
Although I loved you dearly, I could not make you stay
A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest.
God..broke my heart to prove to me, he…… only takes the BEST
Thank you mom, for being so brave and strong.
And for all that you have done for me,
You loved me from the very start,
with your warm, kind, and loving heart.
You’d lift me up, when I was feeling blue,
Thank you mom, for I could always count on you.
You were such- an awesome mother,
it was a privilege to call you Mom.
The love you showed was like no other.
Now I know you’ll watch over me from heaven above.
And a tear I will shed for you every day.
You my bright shining star.
Love always your heart broken daughter

Obituary
Don McGhie
1934-2012
Sadly another of our dwindling band of a remarkable generation of leading farmers has died. Don was born in Harare and educated at Umtali Boys High that nursery of outstanding people. He died in Howick on Sunday 11th of March. In the last few years Don has lived between Harare and his other property in Howick close to where his son Iain is farming.
Don spent most of his farming life in the Norton area apart from a spell leasing Sunnyside Farm in the Nyabira area. He started with Jack Smeeton and learnt his trade from the ground up. His energy and drive soon took him on the path of leasing and then owning his own properties and he rapidly became a leading light in the Norton area.
He played a leading role in the life of the district serving on the Cattle Producer’s Association and as Chairman of the Farmers Association and the Norton Club. His leadership qualities were shown by the way he got the district to combine in bulk buying of inputs.
Don McGhie had a real eye for a beast and was an outstanding cattleman and if Don was buying it was better to let him get on with it. He also built the first curing tunnel in the Norton area and his skill as a mechanic kept his tractors going long after their useful life should have been over. He built and designed his own heat exchangers which contrary to every law of physics appeared to work well and those of us with less skill were in awe of some of these contraptions!
He was a sociable man, and he and Toni were wonderful entertainers and Sunday tennis parties and lunches at Rock were always great occasions. He had many friends and he reveled in their company. He loved his sport most notably golf, tennis and skiing and was a prominent member of the Norton Golf Club and played his part in keeping that lovely course in good shape.
He was a family man and took great pride in the achievements of his 3 sons and daughter and their families and the whole family was devastated when Guy their second son died in September 2010..
In common with many of us he suffered hugely from the wanton destruction wreaked upon his properties in the guise of so-called land reform.
Our sympathy goes out to Toni, Kath, Iain and Cheryl, Duncs and Lisa, Raheela and their families. They will need to be sustained by the memories of the good times and there were plenty of those.

Death Notice
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Ben Zietsman, in South Africa. Unfortunately the full details are not available at the moment but we believe it was caused by a massive heart attack.
Ben was a well known farmer from the Somabhula area in the Matabeleland province, but who was probably better known for his dedicated work with the CFU when he worked as Regional Executive for Matabeleland for a number of years. During his time with the Union he guided farmers through the most difficult early stages of the fast-track land acquisition and for this he earned huge respect, not only in his own constituency but that of the incumbent CFU President’s of that time.
It is therefore my privilege to express our sincere gratitude for the outstanding work that Ben did for our farmers who were under serious threat out there and who on several occasions risked his own live protecting them.
We send our sincere condolences to Ben’s family. May the dear Lord be with them all and may his dear soul rest in peace.

Death Notice
Eric Harrisonpassed away last night from cancer, which he and his family so bravely fought.
We express our deepest sorrow at the passing of this incredible man who has for so many years has been an absolute inspiration to many of the lowveld farmers for his constant experimentation and innovative farming methods. Once off his beloved farm he and Joan moved to Harare where he started a new revolution with the use of vermiculture in agriculture and became known as WormMan, which was his registered trademark. He also wrote a book on the subject which was sold out in a very short time. He also wrote his own autobiography which was published as Jambanja.
Although Eric has been sick for some time he just accepted it and soldiered on without complaining at all. We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Joan and family. May the dear Lord be with them all during this difficult time and may his dear soul rest in peace.
Charles Taffs
President

Foot Note
We do know that the family is battling financially so a special fund has been set up for them, the money from which will be wisely invested so as not to touch the capital and merely to draw on the interest every month. Should anyone be interested in donating they may donate the money through Kerry le Roux at the Union where it will be deposited into a special account.

A TRIBUTE TO ERIC HARRISON
Most of us know Eric as someone who always gives 100% to what he believes in even if it is his dammed trumpet.
Eric and Joan were allocated a beautiful farm at Mkwasine where they were expected to grow cotton and wheat. It soon became evident that cane was a better option and Eric and his neighbors switched to cane achieving some of the highest yields in the low-veldt. Eric and Joan also have three lovely children (what happened to Eric’s drive?)
Soon after sanctions started to bite Eric switched to Coffee and true to his nature he was not satisfied in starting small: he ploughed out and planted half his farm to coffee achieving excellent yields but poor quality.
Eric then went back to growing cane but this time he switched to what is now know as short-row furrow irrigation – again his results were excellent but he was not satisfied so he switched to Drip Irrigation. NOT JUST A TRIAL PLOT! but his whole farm.
We all waited to see what was next and were not surprised to see him plough out half his cane and plant Citrus. The Land reform policy could not have come at a worse time for Eric as his Citrus trees had began to peak in production.
Following losing his and Joan’s beautiful farm Eric had to channel his tremendous drive and energy into some-thing new and demanding and fortunately this was WORM FARMING. Eric wrote and had published an excellent simple and easy to follow guide to worm farming. Eric was given help and advice by Brian Oldreive, Hennie C. Ecksteen, Jako Pieterse and Dr. Brian Campell (EVERY! Farmer and keen gardener should buy a copy) I believe these are available at the CFU office in Harare)
Stories about Eric are numerous, here is one.
Parents at Mkwasine will remember Eric flying their school children down for Harare but after landing there was no sign of the plane. A couple of nervous fathers jumped into a car and raced down the runway where they were met by the sight of Eric sitting in the Pilots seat while six school children pushed the plane up the runway.
Digby Nesbit from N&B will remember being the first person seen to do the same at Harare Main. On both occasion Eric had run out of fuel.
Kindest regards
Ronnie Yeatman

Ben Norton
1929-2011
Ben Norton was born in Aliwal North Eastern Cape and died peacefully in his home in Amber Valley, Howick Natal on the 27th of October 2011.
He spent his last few years in Somerset West,Cape and Howick, Natal.
He was a remarkable man, conservationist, hunter and fisherman, leading and innovative farmer, raconteur and loving husband, father and grandfather. Those of us who knew him well knew him to be a man of action and also ideas. He pushed his strongly held views on a large variety of subjects with determination and sometimes downright cussedness.
His farm Dahywe became a showpiece with his leadership in the use of legumes in pastures and his well stocked game park. He was also a top cattleman with his herd of Brahmins. He was active in organised agriculture being the Chairman of the Cattle Producers Association and a member of C.F.U. Council, also taking a prominent role in the Mashonaland Hunters Association with an interest in conservation education.
Those of us lucky enough to know him well had wonderful trips to the Zambesi with Jenny and him and his property at Chirundu was a mecca for starting fishing and canoeing trips.
Jenny and Ben’s son Larry the well known wildlife artist in a commentary on his work titled “In the Valley of Memories” a wonderful painting of Mana says the following.
“The three buffalo painted in the front of the herd reminded me of my Dad, Ben Norton and his two good friends, John Wood and Bill Francis. The three of them hunted together, fished together, argued furiously across campfires and walked untold miles through dry jesse bush. They gave us kid’s incredible memories, experiences, bellowing reprimands and endless humour”.
All three of those great characters are sadly now no longer with us and this really is the end of an era.
In common with many of us he suffered hugely from the wanton destruction wreaked upon his property in the guise of so-called land reform.
I am personally grateful that Ann and I had the privilege of knowing Ben Norton. He was the kind of person who added a great deal to our lives. We shall miss him but we know he is in a better place. He is survived by his wife Jenny and his son Larry and his family.
Jim Sinclair

Death Notice
The President, Council and staff of the Commercial Farmers’ Union have learned with great sadness of the passing of yet another of the well known characters in the agricultural field in Zimbabwe.
Ben Norton passed away in Howick, Natal on 27 October 2011.
He will be sadly missed in our industry and remembered for his lively debate on CFU Council, particularly when he served as Chairman of the Cattle Producers’ Association. During his service to his community and industry we remember well his sense of humour and his determination to speak his mind on what he firmly believed in. Even though he has spent the last number of years out of the country away from his beloved farm and cattle herd, which he proudly built, his voice was never stifled as he kept up communication through emails.
Our country may have lost another of our great personalities who has put so much into the industry which he so loved, yet he will never be forgotten.
Our sincere condolences go to Jenny, Larry and Sara, Meg, Ben and Madeleine and Dustin and families and may his dear soul rest in peace.
Unfortunately we belatedly learned that the funeral has already taken place at St Lukes Anglican Church, Howick on Monday 31 October

On behalf of the Commercial Farmers’ Union, staff and Council I wish to express our deepest sympathy and sorrow on receipt of the sad news of the loss of William Michael “Mike” Campbell, who passed away peacefully yesterday, 6 April 2011.
He has always held our greatest admiration and respect firstly as a successful farmer in the Chegutu District, and secondly as man of incredible courage, who became known particularly for his stand in his search for justice, which has been so beneficial to so many others who have suffered similar circumstances. He was also a huge inspiration to many of his fellow farmers and their families who had suffered similar losses. He will be remember by all and will definitely not be forgotten.
May the Dear Lord be with him and all his close family and especially with Angela at this difficult time, who has been his loving wife and companion of so many years and has shared both the hardships and joys of their wonderful time which they spent together. We express our sincere condolences to them all.
May his dear soul rest in peace.
