Agriculture Minister Joseph Made has urged farmers to plant short-term variety seeds in areas that received late rains and remains optimistic that harvests this year will be higher than previous years.

But the Commercial Farmers Union president Charles Taffs says poor preparations caused by shortages of inputs and decreased land under tillage is likely to see the country experiencing low yields.

The poor yield last year has seen the World Food Programme estimating that about 2.2 million people need food assistance.

Made said he is hopeful the crop yields will be good despite the challenges.
