THERON, DANIEL JACOBUS (“DANIE”)
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Daniel Jacobus “Danie” Theron on 18 February 2011 in Cape Town, following a long illness.
Danie came up from South Africa in the 1950’s to begin farming as a tobacco assistant in the Gutu District of Masvingo Province, where he soon took the plunge and started on his own, with the assistance of some of the more experienced and established farmers in the district. Danie was a popular and charismatic figure with an incredible and warming personality with a very hearty laugh. He was probably one the longest (and definitely the oldest) players in the then successful Gutu Rugby Team. After he and Aletta were married both their family and businesses grew successfully, they were both also extremely committed to and deeply involved with their community and Church. They were always there to give a helping hand, expecting absolutely nothing in return.
At Independence Danie and Aletta sold some 13 properties to Government and sadly left the community they had grown to love so much and moved to Mwenezi to settle down on Reinette Ranch to ‘retire’. However, with Danie he could never retire as, despite his medical condition could never stop working. He continued ranching with his passion for his Brahman cattle and rebuilt his fortunes in the Lowveld, also building the popular Umvuvu Lodge on the banks of the Reinette Weir on the Mwenezi River. His commitment to his new community was the same as at Gutu, where his and Aletta’s deep caring for other people continued and grew. He was also a past Chairman of the Mwenezi Farmers’ Association at a time when the Lowveld suffered one of the severest droughts in its history.
Sadly, once the land acquisition began, he was persuaded by his family to put his health and his family first after his Umvuvu Lodge was destroyed by invaders and so he relented and sold up his beloved cattle and moved to South Africa near Cape Town to finally retire and to be with his family.
He will be sadly missed but certainly not forgotten as the memories of this wonderful man who always remained young at heart will live on forever.
Our sincere condolences to Aletta, her wonderful children, their families and her grandchildren.
May the Dear Lord be with them all during this most difficult time and may his dear soul rest in peace.

The Discounters Club of Zimbabwe has been established and had its official opening on the 30 November 2010. Its focus is to boost Zimbabwe’s businesses through free advertising for the companies that have joined and will be joining in the future by providing a discount mechanism to the general public of Zimbabwe.
All companies that join will pass on a discount to any customer using a valid Discounters Club Card. The Discounters Club Card will have the name of the member, ID number and a card number for verification purposes. Signage indicating participation will be given to each member of the Discounters Club who offers discounts to card holders.
The Discounters Club has a wide range of companies (with more coming into the fold) offering discounted prices on their products and services to the discount card members. There are a wide range of companies ranging from: Retail; Spares & Hardware; Manufacturing; Gyms; Restaurants; Hair & Beauty Salons; Catering; Groceries; and many others.
The advantages to the companies that come onboard are: Guaranteed and regular free advertising through the AgriZim Magazine, in the yellow pages which goes out to 600 members at present and expanding, advertising through the Classifieds network, with an email address list of over 4000 and growing, the discounters website www.discountersclub.com and a broader customer base as word of the discounters club circulates. Regular newsletters will keep the participating companies briefed as to the clubs growth. Companies can advertise this through their own websites if they so wish.
To the public who wish to become members, you will need to register through the office of Agriculture House, directly through the website, or one of our agents. Once you have registered, it will take 2 days to process the Discounters Club Card. The cost to the member is $30.00 for 6mths or $60 for the year. The potential saving to you is huge through the various discounts on offer, yet the potential to the companies are greater through a bigger, broader customer base.
We now have over 120 companies that have joined as partners in the Harare area and we will be expanding this into other towns and cities throughout Zimbabwe soon. Discounts vary from 2% to as much as 20% for the various companies. As an example, an average customer buying meat through their butchery would cover the cost of their annual subscription “$60 for a year” within 3 months with a 2.5% discount. We are in the process of negotiating with some of the supermarkets, who will come on board offering a 5% discount to pensioners that are card holders. This is a huge saving and for those family members that have parents who are pensioners, the card would be a great gift for them.
