Statement by the Embassy of Canada in Zimbabwe on the November 5 police raid on the Counselling Services Unit (CSU
)
Canada is concerned about a recent series of actions by state security forces against civil
society organisations and political figures in Zimbabwe, the latest of which is the police raid on
November 5 of the Counselling Services Unit (CSU) medical clinic and the arrest
and subsequent detention of three of its members.
CSU is a legally registered organization which provides medical and psychological support to
victims of violence and torture. Its work in Zimbabwe is critical and is supported and respected
by a broad segment of Zimbabweans. Canada condemns the violation of CSU’s premises, the
harassment of its workers, and the confiscation of confidential medical files.
Canada supports the strong calls against violence and for peace from President Mugabe and
Prime Minister Tsvangirai. We call on all parties to the Global Political Agreement and all public
institutions in Zimbabwe to support and protect those working towards the advancement of
human rights, democracy and rule of law in this country.
Canada believes it is crucial that civil society organizations, politicians and all citizens of
Zimbabwe are permitted to undertake their work without fear in this crucial period of constitutionmaking
and as we approach the next election.
