Zimparks locks down Lake Kariba

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has banned fishing in Lake Kariba.

The move is in line with the Covid-19-inspired national lockdown announced by President Mnangagwa on March 27. The lockdown, which has been praised by the President himself for having gone on smoothly so far, enters its eighth day tomorrow.

“All kapenta boats must be parked at the harbours by end of day tomorrow (today) to observe the lockdown. The situation will be reviewed in due course and the industry will be informed in case of any changes.

“Fishing involves a lot of movement from as far as Chiredzi, which might cause problems. We have more than 400 boats operating in Kariba with at least two crew members. That is a huge number. Our teams are on the ground and on high alert to enforce this order,” said ZimParks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo.
